Boarding Experience

All boys board at Cothill, and boarding lies at the heart of the school's ethos. We believe this not only provides the ideal environment for boys to study to their full potential, but also enables them to take better advantage of the wide range of opportunities on offer and develop stronger friendships with those around them. They develop the skills of living in a community, such as participation and tolerance, become more independent and thrive within the environment.

All boys are under the personal care of the Headmaster and his wife who live in the Main House. The House Parents work closely with the Head Matron, three senior residential matrons, a team of nurses and matron assistants. There is always someone to whom a boy can turn, someone who will listen, advise and support.

We want every boy to enjoy the boarding experience and make the most of their time at Cothill. To help facilitate this, Cothill Juniors in Years 4 and 5 have the option of going home at the end of their school commitments each Saturday until Sunday evening or Monday morning - other than on certain closed weekends. In exceptional circumstances, boys come into school daily as they transition into boarding life. From the beginning of Year 6 all boys become full boarders.

Year 4 is all about getting to grips with boarding to set the foundations for future success and happiness. Tidy dorms for about eight boys, adorned with all the usual football paraphanalia, house years 4, 5, 6 and 7 in the main school and year 8s are in Bowlers – a cosy outpost across the games field where, according to parents, boys feel ‘terribly grown up.’
